Description
- Highly active broad-spectrum antibiotic of tetracycline group.
Indications
- Respiratory tract infections
- Gastrointestinal tract infections
- Chlamydial infections
- Sexually transmitted diseases
- Other infections
Dosage
- Usual dose: 200 mg on first day, then 100 mg daily for 7-10 days
- Severe infections: 200 mg daily for 10 days
- Acne: 100 mg daily
- Uncomplicated genital chlamydia, non-gonococcal urethritis: 100 mg twice daily for 7-21 days
Mode of Action
- Bacteriostatic antibiotic
- Inhibits protein synthesis
- Active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, spirochete, mycoplasma, rickettsia and mycobacteria
Pharmacology
- Semisynthetic tetracycline antibiotic with broad spectrum activity
- Active against Staphylococcus aureus, Nocardia, Haemophilus influenzae, E. coli, Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, Rickettsiae, spirochetes, Plasmodium falciparum
Administration
- Capsules should be swallowed whole with plenty of fluid during meals while sitting or standing
Interaction
- Impaired by antacids containing aluminium, calcium or magnesium, and iron containing preparations
- Impaired by bismuth salicylate
- Decreased half-life by barbiturates, carbamazepine and phenytoin
- May render oral contraceptive less effective
- May require downward adjustment of anticoagulant dosages
- Avoid giving in conjunction with penicillin
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any tetracyclines
- Children under 8 years of age
- Pregnant women
- Lactating mothers

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Avoided in pregnant women due to risk of staining and effect on bone growth in the foetus
- Enters breast milk, mothers taking the drug should not breastfeed
Precautions & Warnings
- Avoid use during tooth development to prevent permanent discoloration
- Should not be used in children under 8 years of age
