Indications

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal second generation cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Active against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative susceptible organisms
  • Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by interfering with the transpeptidation process
  • Clavulanic acid is a beta lactamase inhibitor produced by Streptomyces clavuligerus
  • Clavulanic acid protects Cefuroxime from degradation by beta lactamase enzymes

Dosage & Administration

  • 250-500 mg b.i.d. for adults
  • 20 mg/kg/day b.i.d. for paediatric patients
  • Can be taken without regard of food

Interaction

  • Concomitant administration of probenecid increases the area under the serum concentration versus time curve by 50%
  • Drug that reduces gastric acidity may result in a lower bioavailability of Cefuroxime

Contraindications

  • Known allergy to cephalosporin
  • Pseudomembranous Colitis

Side Effects

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal discomfort or pain
  • Prolonged administration may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible microorganisms
  • Rarely: renal dysfunction, anaphylaxis, angioedema, pruritis, rash, urticaria

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Should be avoided in the first trimester if possible
  • Can be safely used in later pregnancy to treat urinary and other infections
  • Excreted into the breast milk in small quantities

Precautions & Warnings

  • Given with care to patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics and with history of colitis
