Indications

  • Relief of discomfort in urinary tract infections
  • Prevention of kidney stones
  • Prevention of gout when used with uricosuric agent
  • Treatment of acidosis caused by kidney diseases

Pharmacology

  • Potassium Citrate and Citric Acid oral solution
  • Systemic alkalizer
  • Metabolized to Potassium Bicarbonate
  • Alkalinizes the urine without producing systemic alkalosis
  • Highly palatable and pleasant tasting
  • Does not neutralize gastric juice or disturb digestion

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult dose: 10-15 ml 4 times daily
  • Adults and children over 6 years: 10 ml 3 times daily
  • Children 1-6 years: 5 ml 3 times daily
  • Pediatric dose: 5-10 ml 4 times daily
  • To be diluted with water

Interaction

  • Concurrent administration of potassium-containing medication may lead to toxicity
  • Concurrent administration of potassium-sparing diuretics may lead to toxicity
  • Concurrent administration of ACE inhibitors may lead to toxicity
  • Concurrent administration of cardiac glycosides may lead to toxicity

Contraindications

  • Severe renal impairment with oliguria or azotemia
  • Untreated Addison's disease
  • Acute dehydration
  • Severe myocardial damage
  • Hyperkalemia from any cause

Side Effects

  • Well tolerated in patients with normal renal function and urinary output
  • Caution required in patients with abnormal renal mechanisms
  • Potential symptoms of potassium intoxication
  • Development of hyperkalemia or alkalosis in certain patients

Pregnancy & Lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Use with caution in patients with low urinary output
  • Dilute adequately with water to minimize gastrointestinal injury
