Description
- Selective inhibitor of α-glucosidase
- Suppresses sharp increase in post-prandial plasma glucose
Indications
- Reduction in Post-Prandial Hyperglycaemia (PPHG)
- Immunotherapy for non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) patients
- Combination therapy with other Oral Hypoglycaemic Agents (OHAs)
- Prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus in impaired glucose tolerance
- Use in elderly patients and those with hepatic dysfunction or mild to moderate renal impairments
- Helpful in preventing hypoglycaemia in patients with type lb glycogen storage disease
- Useful in non-diabetic Hyperinsulinemia
- Helpful in steroid induced diabetes mellitus
Pharmacology
Inhibits alpha-glucosidase enzymes in the small intestines, delaying carbohydrate digestion and absorption

- NormalAdultDose: 0.2 mg, 3 times a day, before each meal
- Pediatrics: Safety and effectiveness not established
- Geriatrics: Lower starting dose recommended for elderly patients
Interaction
- CautionWith:
- Derivative(s) of sulfonylamide and sulfonylurea
- Biguanide derivatives
- Insulin preparations
- Drugs enhancing or diminishing the hypoglycaemic action of antidiabetic drugs
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Voglibose or to any excipients
- Diabetic ketoacidosis, diabetic pre-coma
- Severe infection, before and after operation or with serious trauma
- Gastrointestinal obstruction or predisposition to it
