Indications
- Short-term treatment of bacterial infections in various sites including upper respiratory tract, lower respiratory tract, genito-urinary tract, skin and soft tissue, bone and joint, and other infections
Composition
- 375 mg tablet with Amoxicillin 250 mg and Clavulanic Acid 125 mg
- 625 mg tablet with Amoxicillin 500 mg and Clavulanic Acid 125 mg
- 1 gm tablet with Amoxicillin 875 mg and Clavulanic Acid 125 mg
- Powder for Suspension with Amoxicillin 125 mg and Clavulanic Acid 31.25 mg
- Powder for Suspension (Forte) with Amoxicillin 400 mg and Clavulanic Acid 57.5 mg
- 1.2 gm Injection with Amoxicillin 1 gm and Clavulanate Potassium 200 mg
- 0.6 gm Injection with Amoxicillin 500 mg and Clavulanate Potassium 100 mg
Pharmacology
- Antibacterial combination of Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid with broad bactericidal activity against many microorganisms, protected from degradation by Clavulanic Acid
Dosage
- Recommended dosage varies for adults, children over 12 years, and children of 2 to 12 years for different forms such as tablets, suspension, forte suspension, and IV injection
Administration
- Oral dosage form can be taken without regard to meals, while IV injection is administered over 2 minutes or as a slow intravenous infusion over 30 minutes
Interaction
- Possible effects on bleeding time, prothrombin time, and efficacy of oral contraceptives, caution with concomitant use of allopurinol
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in individuals with history of Penicillin hypersensitivity or previous Co-amoxiclav or Penicillin-associated cholestatic jaundice
Side Effects
- Potential side effects include diarrhea, pseudomembranous colitis, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice, rashes, angioedema, and anaphylaxis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Limited data on use in pregnancy, not recommended unless considered essential by the physician, trace quantities detected in breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Careful usage in patients on anticoagulation therapy, severe hepatic dysfunction, or moderate to severe renal impairment, with maintenance of adequate fluid intake and urinary output during high-dose administration
Use in Special Populations
- Dosage adjustments required for patients with renal impairment and administration caution in hepatic impairment
Overdose Effects
- Overdose unlikely, gastrointestinal symptoms and electrolyte balance disturbances may occur, potential removal by haemodialysis

- Belongs to the therapeutic class of broad-spectrum penicillins
Reconstitution
- Reconstituted for IV injection using Water for Injection BP, and not suitable for reconstitution with certain fluids such as dextrose solution, sodium bicarbonate solution, protein hydrolysates, blood, or plasma
Storage Conditions
- Recommended storage below 25°C, protected from light and moisture, with reconstituted suspension to be refrigerated (not frozen) and used within 7 days, and reconstituted vial to be used within 20 minutes
