Indications
- Improving glycemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus
- Reducing risk of cardiovascular death in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with established cardiovascular disease
Pharmacology
- Sodium glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitor
- Reduces renal absorption of glucose
- Contributes to reduced hyperglycemia, weight loss, and reduced blood pressure
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dose of 10 mg once daily
- Can be taken with or without food
- Dose may be increased to 25 mg once daily in tolerant patients
Interaction
- Increased urine volume when co-administered with diuretics
- Increased risk of hypoglycemia when co-administered with insulin or insulin secretagogues
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity reaction to Empagliflozin or any of its ingredients
- Severe renal impairment
- End-stage renal disease
- Dialysis

- Weakness
- Dizziness
- Increased thirstiness
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Limited studies in pregnant women
- Use during pregnancy only if benefits outweigh potential risks

Precautions & Warnings
- Assessment of renal function recommended before initiation
- Avoid in patients with eGFR less than 45 ml/min/1.73 m²
- No dose adjustment needed in patients with eGFR greater than or equal to 45 ml/min/1.73 m²
Overdose Effects
- Usual supportive measures in case of overdose
- Hemodialysis has not been studied for Empagliflozin removal
