Indications
- Symptomatic treatment of Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis
- Symptomatic treatment of Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
- Symptomatic treatment of Urticaria
Pharmacology
- Long-acting non-sedative antagonist of histamine H1-receptors
- Antagonizes platelet activating factor (PAF)
- Shows better therapeutic effect than isolated antihistamine
- Inhibition of mast cell degranulation
- Inhibition of cytokine release
- Inhibition of tumor necrosis factor alpha in mastocytes and monocytes
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dose for adults and adolescents: 10 mg once a day
- Children aged 2 to 11 years: Different dosage based on weight
Interactions
- Increased systemic exposure with ketoconazole or erythromycin
- Caution with statins, CNS depressants, alcohol
- Interaction with food: Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Rupatadine or any excipients
Side Effects
- Common: Asthenia, dizziness, drowsiness
- Uncommon: Appetite increased, arthralgia, back pain, constipation
- Rare: Palpitations, tachycardia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended unless potential benefit outweighs potential risk
- Not recommended during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with known prolongation of QT interval
- Caution in patients with uncorrected hypokalemia
- Caution in elderly patients
- Not recommended in patients with impaired kidney or liver function
Use in Special Populations
- Caution in elderly patients
- Safety and efficacy not established in patients less than 12 years of age
- Not recommended in patients with renal or hepatic insufficiency
Overdose Effects
- Most common adverse reaction: Somnolence
- Symptomatic treatment and supportive measures recommended
