DosageAdministration
- Hypertension: Total daily dosage 100-400 mg
- Angina: 50-100 mg twice or three times daily
- Cardiac Arrhythmias: 50-300 mg per day in divided doses
- Hyperthyroidism: 50 mg four times a day
- Myocardial Infarction: 50 mg every 6 hours for 48 hours
ModeOfAction
- Selective beta1-blocker
- Reduces heart rate, cardiac output, and blood pressure
- Interferes less with insulin release and carbohydrate metabolism
Interaction
- Catecholamine‐depleting drugs may have an additive effect
- Inhibitors of CYP2D6 likely to increase drug concentration
- Concomitant use of digitalis glycosides can increase the risk of bradycardia
Contraindications
- AV block
- Uncontrolled heart failure
- Severe bradycardia
- Sick-sinus syndrome
- Cardiogenic shock
- Severe peripheral arterial disease
- Hypersensitivity to Metoprolol or other B-blockers
- Complicated myocardial infarction with significant bradycardia or systolic hypotension
