Indications
- Rapid acting wide spectrum disinfectant
- Designed for disinfecting hands, surgical instruments, skin, and wound dressing
Composition
- 0.5% w/v Chlorhexidine Gluconate
- 70% v/v Isopropyl Alcohol BP
Pharmacology
- Bactericidal effect through binding of positively charged chlorhexidine cation to negatively charged bacterial cell walls
- Results in bacteriostatic effect at low concentrations and cell death at high concentrations
Dosage & Administration
- For disinfecting clean hands, take approximately 3 ml and scrub until dry
- For disinfecting surgical instruments, take approximately 5 ml and immerse instruments for 2 minutes
- For disinfecting skin prior to surgery, take approximately 3 ml and scrub with cotton until dry
- For disinfecting wound/wound dressing, take approximately 3 ml and scrub with cotton until dry
Interaction
- Incompatible with soaps and other anionic agents
- May cause brown stains in fabrics previously in contact with chlorhexidine solutions due to hypochlorite bleaches
Contraindications
- Not to be used in patients with hypersensitivity to Chlorhexidine Gluconate or any of its compositions
Side Effects
- May include skin irritation, allergic reactions, teeth discoloration, and eye problems if in direct contact
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Considered safe for pregnant women
- Unknown safety in lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Avoid contact with sensitive tissues, including brain, meninges, and middle ear
- Do not inject or use in body cavities
