Description

  • Colloidal iron (III) hydroxide in complex with Carboxymaltose, a Carbohydrate polymer that releases iron

Indications

  • Treatment of iron deficiency anaemia in adult patients intolerant to oral iron or with non-dialysis dependent chronic kidney disease

Dosage & Administration

  • Stepwise approach for determination, calculation, and administration of individual iron need
  • Maximum recommended cumulative dose of Ferric Carboxymaltose is 1000 mg of iron per week

Interaction

  • Formal drug interaction studies not performed

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to active substance or any excipients
  • Known serious hypersensitivity to other parenteral iron products
  • Anaemia not attributed to iron deficiency
  • Evidence of iron overload or disturbances in iron utilization

Side Effects

  • Infrequent and mild side effects such as nausea, headache, dizziness, and hypertension
  • Common side effect: injection site reactions
  • Uncommon side effects: tachycardia, dyspnoea, abdominal pain
  • Rare side effects: anaphylactoid reactions, loss of consciousness

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled trials in pregnant women
  • Animal data suggest potential influence on fetal skeletal development
  • Use only if benefit outweighs potential risk in second and third trimester
  • Unlikely risk to breast-fed child based on limited data

Precautions & Warnings

  • Serious hypersensitivity reactions reported
  • Monitor for signs and symptoms of hypersensitivity
  • Transient elevations in systolic blood pressure may occur
  • Laboratory tests alterations may overestimate serum iron levels

Use in Special Populations

  • Maximum daily injection dose of 200 mg iron in haemodialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease patients
  • Not recommended in children under 14 years

Overdose Effects

  • Excessive dosages may lead to iron accumulation potentially leading to hemosiderosis
  • Monitor iron parameters such as serum ferritin and transferrin saturation
