Indications

  • Treatment of pharyngitis/tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Treatment of acute bacterial otitis media caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis
  • Treatment of acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae
  • Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections including pneumoniae
  • Treatment of uncomplicated skin and skin-structure infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections caused by E.coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae
  • Treatment of bone and joint infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus
  • Treatment of uncomplicated Gonorrhoea caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal second generation cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Active against wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative susceptible organisms
  • Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis

Dosage & Administration

  • Dosage for adults and adolescents: 250-500 mg b.i.d. for various durations for different conditions
  • Dosage for paediatric patients: 20-30 mg/kg/day b.i.d. for various durations for different conditions
  • May be taken without regard to food

Interaction

  • Concomitant administration of probenecid with Cefuroxime-Clavulanic Acid increases serum concentration by 50%
  • Drugs that reduce gastric acidity may lower bioavailability

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to cephalosporin
  • Contraindicated in patients with Pseudomembranous Colitis

Side Effects

  • Well tolerated, but may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort or pain
  • Prolonged administration may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible microorganisms

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Avoid in first trimester if possible
  • Can be used in later pregnancy for treating urinary and other infections
  • Excreted into breast milk in small quantities

Precautions & Warnings

  • Use with care in patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
  • Use with care in patients with history of colitis
