Indications

Pharmacology
- Bactericidal second generation cephalosporin antibiotic
- Active against wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative susceptible organisms
- Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis
Dosage & Administration
- Dosage for adults and adolescents: 250-500 mg b.i.d. for various durations for different conditions
- Dosage for paediatric patients: 20-30 mg/kg/day b.i.d. for various durations for different conditions
- May be taken without regard to food
Interaction
- Concomitant administration of probenecid with Cefuroxime-Clavulanic Acid increases serum concentration by 50%
- Drugs that reduce gastric acidity may lower bioavailability
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to cephalosporin
- Contraindicated in patients with Pseudomembranous Colitis
Side Effects
- Well tolerated, but may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort or pain
- Prolonged administration may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible microorganisms
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Avoid in first trimester if possible
- Can be used in later pregnancy for treating urinary and other infections
- Excreted into breast milk in small quantities
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with care in patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
- Use with care in patients with history of colitis
