Description

- Treats pancreatitis and serves as a phosphate binder in chronic renal failure
Composition
- Each tablet contains Calcium Carbonate USP 1250 mg (Coral source) equivalent to 500 mg of elemental Calcium & Vitamin D USP 200 IU
- Each DX tablet contains Calcium Carbonate USP 1500 mg (Coral source) equivalent to 600 mg of elemental Calcium & Vitamin D USP 400 IU
- Each effervescent tablet contains Calcium Carbonate (Coral source) USP 1500 mg equivalent to 600 mg of elemental Calcium and Vitamin D3 400 IU as Cholecalciferol USP
Pharmacology
- Calcium is vital for bodily functions; useful for prevention and treatment of Osteoporosis and associated fractures
- Vitamin D aids in Calcium absorption from the GI tract and stimulates bone formation
- Coral Calcium sourced from coral origin with a similar chemical structure to human bone; ensures better absorption
Dosage & Administration
- One tablet once or twice daily with plenty of water or as directed by the physician
- Dissolve 1 effervescent tablet in a glass of water to drink orally; ensure better absorption by taking with food
Interaction
- Thiazide diuretics reduce urinary excretion of calcium; monitor serum calcium levels
- Systemic corticosteroids reduce calcium absorption; consider increasing calcium tablet dose
- Simultaneous treatment with ion exchange resins may reduce vitamin D absorption; space intake with calcium tablet
- Calcium carbonate may interfere with the absorption of tetracycline preparations; administer tetracycline at least two hours before or four to six hours after calcium intake
- Hypercalcaemia may increase cardiac glycoside toxicity; monitor ECG and serum calcium levels
- Administer CoralMax-DX at least three hours before bisphosphonate or sodium fluoride intake to avoid reduced gastrointestinal absorption
- Avoid taking calcium products within two hours of high oxalic acid and phytic acid foods
Contraindications
- Hypercalcemia and hyperparathyroidism
- Hypercalciuria and nephrolithiasis
- Hypersensitivity to the component of this preparation
- Severe renal insufficiencies
- Concomitant digoxin therapy; requires careful monitoring of serum Calcium level
Side Effects
- Irritating to the GI tract; may cause constipation
- Rarely produces hypercalcemia, allergic reactions, irregular heartbeats
- Nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, dry mouth, drowsiness
- Skin rash reported following vitamin D supplements
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Daily intake during pregnancy should not exceed 1500 mg calcium and 600 IU cholecalciferol
- High dose of vitamin D shown to have reproductive toxicity in animals
- Avoid overdoses as it can lead to adverse effects on the developing foetus
- No indications that therapeutic doses of vitamin D are teratogenic in humans
- Calcium and vitamin D3 pass into breast milk

- Consider special monitoring for elderly patients, patients on concomitant treatment with cardiac glycosides or diuretics, and patients with high tendency to calculus formation

- Prescribe with caution to patients suffering from sarcoidosis; monitor calcium levels and urinary calcium excretion
- Use with caution in immobilised patients with osteoporosis due to increased risk of hypercalcemia

- Take additional doses under close medical supervision; monitor serum calcium levels and urinary calcium excretion frequently
Overdose Effects
- Can lead to hypervitaminosis D and hypercalcemia
- Symptoms may include anorexia, thirst, nausea, vomiting, constipation, muscle weakness, mental disturbances
- Treatment involves discontinuing calcium and other relevant medications, rehydration, and monitoring serum electrolytes and renal function
