Pharmacology
- direct-acting sympathomimetic
- stimulates alpha-adrenergic receptors
- vasoconstriction
- raises systolic and diastolic BP
- reflex slowing of heart rate
Dosage & Administration
- infusion into a large vein
- blood volume depletion correction
- diluent: 5 percent dextrose injection or 5 percent dextrose and sodium chloride injections
- average dosage: 4 mcg/ml diluted in 5% dextrose solution
- high dosage titrated according to patient response
- duration of therapy
- adjunctive treatment in cardiac arrest
Interaction
- contraindicated with cyclopropane and halothane anesthesia
- risk of cardiac arrhythmias with profound hypoxia or hypercarbia
- caution with monoamine oxidase inhibitors or tricyclic antidepressants
Contraindications
- hypotensive from blood volume deficits
- mesenteric or peripheral vascular thrombosis
- contraindicated with cyclopropane and halothane anesthesia
- cardiac arrhythmia risk with hypoxia or hypercarbia

Overdose Effects
