Indications

  • Treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD)

Pharmacology

  • Irreversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase
  • MAO-B inhibitory activity
  • Increase in extracellular levels of dopamine
  • Beneficial effects in models of dopaminergic motor dysfunction

Dosage & Administration

  • Recommended dose: 1 mg orally once daily
  • Initial dose: 1 mg daily for patients taking levodopa
  • Pediatric use: Safety & effectiveness not established
  • Geriatric use: No significant safety profile differences

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated for use with meperidine, tramadol, methadone, propoxyphene
  • Contraindicated with MAO inhibitors (MAOIs) including other selective MAO-B inhibitors

Precautions & Warnings

  • Exacerbation of hypertension may occur
  • Serotonin syndrome risk
  • Caution with concomitant use of ciprofloxacin or other CYP1A2 inhibitors
  • Hepatic impairment precautions
  • Concomitant use of Rasagil and fluoxetine or fluvoxamine should be avoided
  • Concomitant use of Rasagil and dextromethorphan or sympathomimetics not recommended
  • Possible association with Parkinson's disease and a higher risk of skin cancer
  • Evaluation of suspicious skin lesions by a specialist
