Rasagil 1 mg (Tablet)

Indications

• Treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD)
• Monotherapy or adjunct therapy

Pharmacology

• Irreversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase
• Increases extracellular levels of dopamine
• Beneficial effects in models of dopaminergic motor dysfunction

Dosage & Administration

• Recommended dose of 1 mg orally once daily
• Initial dose of 0.5 mg once daily when used with levodopa
• Consideration of levodopa dose reduction when used in combination
• Pediatric use not established
• No significant safety differences in geriatric patients

Contraindications

• Do not use with meperidine, tramadol, methadone, propoxyphene, or MAO inhibitors
• Risk of serotonin syndrome

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy category C
• Caution in prescribing to pregnant women
• Experimental data indicates inhibition of prolactin secretion
• Caution in breastfeeding mothers

Precautions & Warnings

• Exacerbation of hypertension may occur
• No dietary tyramine restriction required at recommended doses
• Risk of serotonin syndrome with concomitant use of certain antidepressants or MAOIs
• Ciprofloxacin or other CYP1A2 inhibitors may affect dose
• Dose adjustment in hepatic impairment
• Avoid concomitant use with fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, dextromethorphan, sympathomimetics
• Possibility of association with skin cancer - evaluation of suspicious skin lesions advised

Overdose Effects

• Signs may include drowsiness, dizziness, faintness, hyperactivity, hallucinations, convulsions
• No specific antidote
• Respiration support and fluid/electrolyte balance essential
