Indications
- Symptomatic treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis
- Symptomatic treatment of perennial allergic rhinitis
- Symptomatic treatment of urticaria
Pharmacology
- Long-acting non-sedative antagonist of histamine H1-receptors
- Antagonizes platelet activating factor (PAF)
- Inhibition of mast cell degranulation and cytokine release
- Improves therapeutic effect compared to isolated antihistamines
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dose for adults and adolescents: 10 mg once daily
- May be taken with or without food
- Children aged 2 to 11 years dosage based on weight
Interaction
- Increased systemic exposure when co-administered with ketoconazole or erythromycin
- Caution advised with statins, CNS depressants, or alcohol
- Grapefruit and grapefruit juice should not be taken simultaneously
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Rupatadine or any of the excipients
Side Effects
- Common: asthenia, dizziness, drowsiness
- Uncommon: increased appetite, back pain, impaired concentration, constipation, cough, diarrhea, dry throat, nosebleeds, fever, gastrointestinal discomfort, increased infection risk, malaise, myalgia, nausea, throat pain, rash, thirst, vomiting, weight gain
- Rare: palpitations, tachycardia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit outweighs potential risk
- Not recommended during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Use caution in patients with known QT interval prolongation, uncorrected hypokalemia, or proarrhythmic conditions
- Caution advised in elderly patients
- Not recommended for patients with impaired kidney or liver function
Use in Special Populations
- Elderly: caution advised, no dose adjustment required
- Children: safety and efficacy not established in patients under 12 years
- Patients with renal or hepatic insufficiency: not recommended
Overdose Effects
- Most common adverse reaction: somnolence
- Symptomatic treatment and required supportive measures
