Indications

  • Treatment of single infection or mixed infections
  • Infections resistant to other antibiotics
  • Infections of urinary, respiratory, and gastrointestinal tracts
  • Gonorrhoea and septicaemia
  • Infections of skin, soft tissues, and biliary tract
  • Bone and joint infections
  • Eye, ear, nose and throat infections
  • Pelvic infections
  • Gastrointestinal infections

Pharmacology

  • Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
  • Broad spectrum of activity against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria
  • Bactericidal action by interference with DNA gyrase
  • Rapid and well absorption from GI tract
  • Widely distributed in body tissues and fluids
  • About 30%-50% excreted in urine within 24 hours

Dosage

  • Dosage based on severity and type of infection, patient's renal function
  • Dosage range for adults: 100-750 mg twice daily
  • Dosage adjustment for impaired renal function
  • Duration of treatment based on clinical response and bacteriological findings

Administration

  • Instructions for IV infusion administration
  • Precautions for checking bag for leaks, not using if solution is cloudy, regulating rate of administration

Interaction

  • Avoid concurrent administration with magnesium or aluminum antacids
  • Avoid concurrent use with products containing calcium, iron, or zinc
  • Avoid concurrent use with milk or other dairy products

Contraindications

  • History of hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones

Side Effects

  • Gastrointestinal disturbances
  • Central nervous system disturbances
  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Joint pain, mild photosensitivity
  • Transient increase in liver enzymes
  • Risk of hypoglycemia and mental health adverse effects

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Not recommended for use during pregnancy due to arthropathy in immature animals
  • Not recommended for administration to nursing mothers

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution in patients with CNS disorders or predisposition to seizures
  • Precautions for concurrent administration with specific products

Use in Special Populations

  • Not a drug of first choice in pediatric population

Overdose Effects

  • May lead to seizures, hallucinations, renal and hepatic impairment
  • Crystalluria, haematuria, reversible renal toxicity
