Indications
- Hyperlipidemias of type Ila
- Hyperlipidemias of type IIb
- Hyperlipidemias of type III
- Hyperlipidemias of type IV
- Hyperlipidemias of type V
Pharmacology
- Rapidly hydrolyzed after oral ingestion to fenofibric acid
- Reduces total cholesterol
- Reduces LDL cholesterol
- Reduces Apo-lipoprotein B
- Reduces total triglycerides
- Reduces VLDL
- Increases HDL
- Increases apo-proteins apoAI
- Increases apo-proteins apoAII
- Reduces serum uric acid levels
- Enhanced absorption with micronized form
Dosage & Administration
- Initial dose for hypercholesterolemia or mixed hyperlipidemia - 200 mg per day
- Initial dose for hypertriglyceridemia - 67 to 200 mg per day
- Dose should be individualized according to patient response
- Should be given with meal for optimizing bioavailability
Interaction
- Potentiates anticoagulant effects of warfarin
- May improve glucose tolerance when administered with antidiabetic drugs
- May increase nephrotoxicity of cyclosporine
- Cautions against use with HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors
- Low-dose statins appear to be well tolerated with Fenogard
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Fenofibrate
- Severe renal or hepatic impairment
- Existing gall bladder disease
- Breast feeding mothers
- Photosensitivity to ketoprofen

- Gastro-intestinal symptoms (e.g. nausea, anorexia, gastric pain)
- Pruritus
- Urticaria
- Impotence
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Vertigo
- Fatigue
- Hair loss
- Myotoxicity
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for pregnant women
Precautions & Warnings
- Special care needed in patients with renal disease
- Discontinue if myotoxicity suspected or creatinine kinase concentration increases significantly
- Liver function tests recommended every 3 months for first year
Overdose Effects
- No specific treatment for overdose with Fenogard
- General supportive care indicated
- Monitoring of vital signs and clinical status
