Indications
- Treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis
- Treatment of acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
- Treatment of community-acquired pneumonia
- Treatment of uncomplicated and complicated urinary tract infections
- Treatment of acute pyelonephritis
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
- Treatment of enteric infections
- Treatment of diarrhea, cholera, shigellosis, and enteritis
Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum antibiotic
- Inhibition of bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase
- Inhibition of DNA replication, transcription repair, and recombination
- Activity against a wide range of gram-negative and gram-positive microorganisms
Dosage
- Dosage forms: 250 mg, 500 mg, 750 mg tablets, oral solution, injection
- Usual oral dose: 250 mg, 500 mg, or 750 mg every 24 hours
- Oral solution administration: 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating
- Injection administration: intravenous infusion only
- Usual injection dose: 250 mg, 500 mg, or 750 mg by slow infusion over 60-90 minutes every 24 hours
- Sequential therapy (intravenous to oral) may be instituted
Administration
- Checking the solution for leaks and seal integrity
- Avoiding cloudy or precipitate-containing solutions
- Avoiding flexible containers in series connections
- Proper setup of administration set and flow control clamp
- Regulating the rate of administration
Interaction
- Avoid co-administration with multivalent cations
- Reduced absorption with antacids, iron, and adsorbents
- Increased risk of CNS stimulation with NSAIDs
- Increased risk of bleeding with warfarin
Contraindications
- History of hypersensitivity to levofloxacin or quinolone antimicrobial agents
Side Effects
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence
- Rare occurrence of phototoxicity
- Rare side effects: retinal detachment, tremors, depression, anxiety, confusion
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy or nursing
- Effects on the unborn child or nursing infant are unknown
Precautions & Warnings
- Administered by slow intravenous infusion
- Adequate water intake to avoid concentrated urine
- Dose adjustment in the presence of renal insufficiency
Overdose Effects
- Low potential for acute toxicity
- Stomach should be emptied in case of acute overdosage
- Patient should be kept under observation
- Appropriate hydration should be maintained
