Description

Primocef is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by sensitive bacteria. Its pharmacology includes broad-spectrum bactericidal activity against common pathogens, including beta-lactamase producing strains. It has good stability to bacterial beta-lactamase and is active against many ampicillin-resistant and amoxycillin-resistant strains.

Usability Features

  • Administration: Recommended to use freshly reconstituted solution. Maintains potency for at least 24 hours at room temperature or 48 hours at 5°C
  • Interaction: No potentially hazardous interactions reported
  • Contraindications: Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cephalosporins
  • Side Effects: Adverse effects occurred infrequently and have been generally mild and transient in nature. Prolonged use may result in the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms
  • Pregnancy & Lactation: Cefuroxime is US FDA pregnancy category B. Excreted in human milk, caution advised when administered to nursing women
  • Precautions & Warnings: Should be given with care to patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics & who have a history of colitis. Cross reactions with penicillin have been reported, but not likely to be a problem at recommended dose levels
  • Reconstitution:
    • For 750 mg intramuscular injection: Add 3 ml water for injection to vial and then shake gently for dispersion
    • For 750 mg intravenous injection: Add 8 ml water for injection to vial and then shake gently for dispersion. The solution should be slowly injected directly into a vein over a 3 to 5 minutes period
    • For 1.5 g intravenous injection: Add 16 ml Water for injection to vial and then shake gently for dispersion. The solution should be slowly injected directly into a vein over a 3 to 5 minutes period
  • Storage Conditions: Store in a cool, dry place (below 30°C), away from light & moisture. Keep out of the reach of children
