Indications
- Improving glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus
- Reducing the risk of cardiovascular death in adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and established cardiovascular disease
Pharmacology
- Sodium glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitor
- Reduces renal absorption of glucose
- Contributes to reduced hyperglycemia
- Assists weight loss
- Lowers blood pressure
Dosage and Administration
- Recommended dose of 10mg once daily
- May be increased to 25mg once daily in tolerant patients
- To be taken in the morning, with or without food
- Correction of volume depletion recommended before initiation
Interaction
- Increased urine volume when co-administered with diuretics
- Increased risk of hypoglycemia when co-administered with insulin or insulin secretagogues
- SGLT2 inhibitors lead to positive urine glucose tests, alternative methods recommended for monitoring glycemic control
- Unreliable measurements of 1,5-AG in assessing glycemic control when taking SGLT2 inhibitors
Contraindications
- History of serious hypersensitivity reaction to Empagliflozin or any of its ingredients
- Severe renal impairment
- End-stage renal disease
- Dialysis

- Dehydration
- Hypotension
- Weakness
- Dizziness
- Increased thirstiness
Pregnancy and Lactation
- Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus
- Not recommended during breastfeeding
Precautions and Warnings
- Assessment of renal function recommended before initiation
- Not to be initiated in patients with eGFR less than 45 ml/min/1.73 m^2
- No dose adjustment needed in patients with eGFR greater than or equal to 45 ml/min/1.73 m^2
Overdose Effects
- Usual supportive measures recommended in case of overdose
- Hemodialysis study not conducted for Sucozin removal
