Indications

  • Treatment of essential (primary) hypertension
  • Treatment of secondary hypertension
  • Treatment of left ventricular failure
  • Treatment of Raynaud's phenomenon and disease
  • Adjunct in symptomatic treatment of urinary obstruction caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia

Pharmacology

  • Decrease in total peripheral vascular resistance through selective inhibition of postsynaptic alpha-1-adrenoreceptors in vascular smooth muscle
  • Therapeutic efficacy in congestive heart failure
  • Reduction in severity of signs, symptoms, frequency, and duration of attacks in patients with Raynaud's disease
  • Improvement of urinary pressure profile in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia

Dosage & Administration

  • Adjustment of dosage according to patient's individual toleration
  • Initiation with low starting dose for best toleration
  • Maintenance dosage for hypertension
  • Titration of dosage for left ventricular failure
  • Starting dosage and maintenance dosage for Raynaud's phenomenon and disease
  • Recommended starting dose and usual maintenance dose for benign prostatic hyperplasia
  • Initiation of therapy with Prazosin XR
  • Titration of dosage for hypertensive patients controlled on Prazosin Tablets
  • Addition of diuretic or other antihypertensive agent to prazosin

Interaction

  • Administration without adverse drug interaction with cardiac-glycosides-digitalis and digoxin
  • Administration without adverse drug interaction with hypoglycemic agents-insulin, chlorpropamide, phenformin, tolazamide, and tolbutamide
  • Administration without adverse drug interaction with tranquilizers and sedatives-chlordiazepoxide, diazepam, and phenobarbital
  • Administration without adverse drug interaction with antiarrhythmic agents-procainamide, propranolol, and quinidine
  • Administration without adverse drug interaction with analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory agents-propxyphene, aspirin, indomethacin, and phenylbutazone type

Contraindications

  • Known sensitivity to quinazolines

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No teratogenic effects seen in animal testing
  • Recommended cautious use during pregnancy
  • Excretion in small amounts in human milk
  • Caution in administration to nursing mothers

Precautions & Warnings

  • Avoidance of postural hypotension symptoms during initiation of therapy
  • Avoidance of situations where injury could result from dizziness or weakness
  • Importance of careful adjustment of diuretic dosage for patients with left ventricular failure
  • Close monitoring of blood pressure during administration to patients already taking medications known to lower blood pressure

Use in Special Populations

  • Not recommended for children under the age of 12 years
  • Not recommended in the treatment of left ventricular failure due to mechanical obstruction

Overdose Effects

  • Accidental ingestion and resulting effects
  • Support of cardiovascular system in case of hypotension
  • Monitoring and support of renal function
  • Not dialyzable because it is protein bound
