Indications
- Treatment of hypertension
- Use in patients not controlled on monotherapy
- Initial therapy for patients likely to need multiple drugs
Pharmacology
- Irbesartan blocks AT1 angiotensin II receptor
- Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic affecting renal tubular mechanisms
Dosage & Administration
- Initial dose: Irbesartan 150mg & Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5mg orally once a day
- Maximum dose: Irbesartan 300mg & Hydrochlorothiazide 25mg orally once a day
Interaction
- Interactions with other antihypertensives, lithium, diuretics, corticosteroids, digitalis glycosides, NSAIDs, and more
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component
- Anuria or hypersensitivity to sulfonamide-derived drugs
- Coadministration with aliskiren in patients with diabetes

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category D
- Discontinue use during pregnancy
- Thiazides in pregnancy associated with risk of jaundice and thrombocytopenia in infants

Precautions & Warnings
- Discontinue use during nursing
- Caution in patients with renal or liver dysfunction
Use in Special Populations
- No dose adjustment for mild to moderate renal dysfunction
- Not recommended in severe renal dysfunction
Overdose Effects
- Irbesartan overdose likely to cause hypotension and tachycardia
- Hydrochlorothiazide overdose may result in electrolyte depletion and dehydration
