Acusan Plus 50 mg+12.5 mg (Tablet)

Indications

• Treatment of hypertension
• Risk reduction of stroke in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy

Pharmacology

• Losartan and its active metabolite block the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II
• Hydrochlorothiazide affects the renal tubular mechanisms of electrolyte reabsorption

Dosage

• Usual starting dose of 50/12.5 is one tablet once daily
• Antihypertensive effect is attained within three weeks after initiation of therapy

Administration

• May be administered with or without food

Interaction

• Potential interactions with potassium-sparing diuretics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, alcohol, barbiturates, or narcotics
• Dosage adjustment of antidiabetic drugs may be required

Contraindications

• Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to any component of the product
• Contraindicated in patients with anuria or hypersensitivity to sulfonamide-derived drugs

Side Effects

• Symptomatic hypotension, dizziness
• Hyperkalaemia, angioedema
• Gastro-intestinal disturbances, angina, palpitation, oedema, dyspnoea

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Avoided in pregnancy unless essential
• Not recommended in breastfeeding

Precautions & Warnings

• Periodic determination of serum electrolytes
• Hypokalemia may rarely develop
• Impaired renal function
• Symptomatic hypotension

Use in Special Populations

• Loop diuretics preferred to thiazides in patients with severe renal impairment
• Not recommended in patients with hepatic impairment
• Safety and effectiveness not established in pediatric patients

Overdose Effects

• Manifestations may include hypotension, tachycardia, hypokalemia, dehydration
• Supportive treatment should be instituted in case of symptomatic hypotension

Therapeutic Class
