Indications
- Patients with primary hyperlipidemia

- Pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia
- Risk reduction of Myocardial Infarction (MI)
- Stroke and arterial revascularization procedures
Pharmacology
- Selective and competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase
- Converts 3-hydroxy-3-methyl glutaryl coenzyme A to mevalonate
- Increases the number of hepatic LDL receptors
- Inhibits hepatic synthesis of VLDL
Dosage & Administration
- 5-20 mg/day for Heterozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia in Pediatric Patients
- 40 mg once daily for Very High Cholesterol and High Risk of Ml or Stroke
- 20 mg once daily for Homozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia
- Dosage in Asian Patients - Initiation with 5 mg once daily
- Interaction with Cyclosporine, Lopinavir/Ritonavir or Atazanavir/Ritonavir
- Dosage in Patients with Severe Renal Impairment

- Coumarin anticoagulants
- Concomitant lipid-lowering therapies
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to product components
- Liver disease
- Pregnant women and women who may become pregnant

- Administered to women of childbearing age when highly unlikely to conceive

- Temporary withholding in patients with acute, serious condition suggestive of myopathy
- Liver enzyme tests before and following initiation of therapy
