Indications

  • Treatment of iron deficiency anaemia

Description

  • Colloidal iron (III) hydroxide in complex with Carboxymaltose

Dosage & Administration

  • Stepwise approach for posology
  • Individual iron need determination based on body weight and haemoglobin level
  • Calculation and administration of the iron dose(s)
  • Post-iron repletion assessments

Interaction

  • No formal drug interaction studies performed

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to the active substance or any excipients
  • Serious hypersensitivity to other parenteral iron products
  • Anaemia not attributed to iron deficiency
  • Evidence of iron overload or disturbances in the utilisation of iron

Side Effects

  • Infrequent, usually mild, generally do not cause treatment discontinuation
  • Common: nausea, headache, dizziness, hypertension, injection site reactions
  • Uncommon: hypersensitivity, dysgeusia, tachycardia, hypotension, flushing, dyspnoea, abdominal pain
  • Rare: anaphylactoid reactions, loss of consciousness, anxiety, phlebitis, syncope

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled trials in pregnant women
  • Animal data suggest potential influence on fetal skeletal development
  • Caution required for use during pregnancy and lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Serious hypersensitivity reactions reported
  • Monitor for signs of hypersensitivity
  • Transient elevations in systolic blood pressure
  • Laboratory test alterations in the 24 hours following administration

Use in Special Populations

  • Patients with haemodialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease: dosage limitations
  • Not recommended for children under 14 years

Overdose Effects

  • Accumulation of iron in storage sites potentially leading to hemosiderosis
  • Monitoring of iron parameters such as serum ferritin and transferrin saturation
