Indications
- For blood pressure control in certain acute hypotensive states
Pharmacology
- Direct-acting sympathomimetic
- Stimulates β1- and α-adrenergic receptors
- Causes vasoconstriction
- Raises systolic and diastolic BP
Dosage & Administration
- Infusion into a large vein
- Diluted in 5 percent dextrose injection
- Average dosage of 4mcg/ml solution by intravenous infusion
Interaction
- Contraindicated with cyclopropane and halothane anesthesia
- Extreme caution with monoamine oxidase inhibitors
- Severe, prolonged hypertension may result
Contraindications
- Hypotensive patients without blood volume replacement
- Patients with vascular thrombosis
- Contraindicated with specific anesthetics

- Ischemic injury
- Bradycardia
- Anxiety
- Extravasation necrosis at injection site
- Respiratory difficulty
- Gangrene in extremities
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C
- Caution in nursing women
- Unknown excretion in human milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Record blood pressure regularly
- Avoid administering into lower extremity veins
- Avoid extravasation into tissues
- Use adrenergic blocking agent for extravasation ischemia

- Safety and effectiveness not established in children and adolescents
- Elderly patients need cautious dosing and infusion site selection
Overdose Effects
- Severe hypertension
- Reflex bradycardia
- Marked increase in peripheral resistance
- Decreased cardiac output
Therapeutic Class

Reconstitution
- Dilute with 5% glucose injection
- Dilution with sodium chloride injection alone not recommended
