Therapeutic Class

Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis
- Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria
Pharmacology
- Binds to and stabilizes the inactive form of the H1 receptor
- Prevents activation and downstream effects of histamine binding
- Potent and selective affinity for H1 receptors
- No evidence of antidopaminergic, antiserotonergic, anticholinergic, sedative, or adrenergic blocking activity
- Does not cross the blood-brain barrier
Dosage & Administration
- Adults and children 12 years and older: 60 mg twice daily or 120 mg once daily or 180 mg once daily for allergic rhinitis
- Adults and children 12 years and older: 60 mg twice daily or 120 mg once daily or 180 mg once daily for chronic idiopathic urticaria
Interaction
- No hepatic biotransformation
- Increased plasma levels when coadministered with erythromycin or ketoconazole
- No interaction observed with omeprazole
- Reduction in bioavailability when administered with antacids containing aluminium and magnesium hydroxide
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of its ingredients
Side Effects
- Common: headache, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea
- Uncommon: fatigue
- Hypersensitivity reactions, tachycardia, palpitations, diarrhea, rash, urticaria, pruritus
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Limited data in pregnant women, not recommended unless clearly necessary
- Fexofenadine was found to cross into human breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Limited data in older people, renally or hepatically impaired patients
- Administered with caution in these special groups
- Association with adverse reactions like tachycardia and palpitations
- Unlikely to produce significant effects on the ability to drive or use machines
- Suggested to check individual response before driving or performing complicated tasks
Use in Special Populations
- Altered pharmacokinetics in individuals with renal impairment
- Altered pharmacokinetics in individuals over 65 years of age
- Moderate to severe hepatic disease does not substantially affect the pharmacokinetics
Overdose Effects
- Reported effects of dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, dry mouth
- No development of clinically significant adverse reactions at certain doses
- Maximum tolerated dose not established
- Symptomatic and supportive treatment recommended
- Haemodialysis does not effectively remove from blood
