Indications

  • Treatment of single infection or mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms
  • Infections caused by organisms resistant to other antibiotics
  • Wide range of infections caused by susceptible organisms including urinary, respiratory, gastrointestinal tracts, gonorrhea, and septicaemia

Pharmacology

  • Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
  • Broad spectrum of activity against gram-negative and gram-positive aerobic bacteria
  • Bactericidal action results from interference with DNA gyrase
  • Rapid and well absorption from the G.I. tract
  • Widely distributed into body tissues and fluids
  • Half-life is about 3.5 hours
  • 30% to 50% of oral dose excreted in urine within 24 hours

Dosage

  • Dosage determined by severity and type of infection, sensitivity of causative organism(s), age, weight, and renal function
  • Dosage range for adults: 100-750 mg twice daily
  • Different dosage for urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, gonorrhea, and other infections
  • Adjustment in case of impaired renal function
  • Duration of treatment depends upon severity of infection, clinical response, and bacteriological findings

Administration

  • Instruction for the use of Ciprofloxacin IV infusion
  • Proper handling and preparation of IV infusion

Interaction

  • Concurrent administration with certain antacids and products containing Calcium, Iron, Zinc, or dairy products should be avoided
  • Specific timing for intake of certain products in relation to QNOL intake

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones

  • Gastrointestinal disturbances
  • Central nervous system disturbances
  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Joint pain
  • Mild photosensitivity
  • Transient increase in liver enzymes
  • Risk of hypoglycemia and mental health adverse effects

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Not recommended during pregnancy due to potential risk of arthropathy in immature animals and secretion in milk

Precautions & Warnings

  • Use with caution in patients with suspected or known CNS disorders
  • Avoid concurrent administration with certain antacids and dairy products

Use in Special Populations

  • Not a drug of first choice in pediatric population

Overdose Effects

  • May lead to seizures, hallucinations, confusion, abdominal discomfort, renal and hepatic impairment, crystalluria, haematuria, and reversible renal toxicity
