Medicine Details

Indications

  • Inflammatory conditions - uveitis, marginal keratitis, allergic conjunctivitis, blepharitis, episcleritis
  • Otitis externa and other inflammatory conditions in the ear
  • Inflammatory conditions in the nose

Pharmacology

  • Corticosteroid effective in inflammatory dermatoses
  • Effective in less responsive conditions such as psoriasis
  • Bactericidal antibiotic against bacteria commonly associated with skin infections
  • Interferes with initiation complex between mRNA and the 30s subunit, inhibiting protein synthesis

Dosage & Administration

  • 1 drop instilled into the eye every one or two hours
  • 2 or 3 drops instilled into the ear every two or three hours
  • 2 or 3 drops instilled into each nostril two or three times daily
  • Eye ointment applied thinly and evenly to the conjunctival sac at night or 3-4 times daily

Contraindications

  • Viral, fungal, tuberculous, or purulent conditions
  • Contra-indicated in the eye if glaucoma is present
  • Preparations containing neomycin should not be used for treating otitis externa when the ear drum is perforated

Side Effects

  • Acute sensitization to neomycin
  • Serious rise in intraocular pressure
  • Thinning of the cornea leading to perforation
  • Cataract reported after unduly prolonged treatment with topical corticosteroids

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy Category-Not Classified
  • Topical administration of corticosteroid to pregnant animals can cause abnormalities of fetal development

Precautions & Warnings

  • Steroids should not be administered to "red eyes" until a definitive diagnosis has been made
  • Treatment with steroid preparations should not be repeated or prolonged without regular review
  • Unnecessary topical use of neomycin containing products should be avoided
