Description
- Barbiturate
- Nonselective
- Central nervous system depressant
- Primarily used as a sedative hypnotic
- Also used as an anticonvulsant in subhypnotic doses
Pharmacology
- Acts on GABA(A) receptors
- Increases synaptic inhibition
- Elevates seizure threshold
- Reduces the spread of seizure activity from a seizure focus
- May inhibit calcium channels
Dosage & Administration
- Pediatric oral dosage: Preoperative, Anticonvulsant
- Adult oral dosage: Daytime sedative, Bedtime hypnotic, Anticonvulsant
- Pediatric injection dosage: Preoperative sedation, Anticonvulsant
- Adult injection dosage: Insomnia, Convulsions, Status Epilepticus
Interaction
- Concomitant use of Alcohol or other CNS depressants may produce additive CNS depressant effects

- History of latent porphyria

- Administer with caution to patients with hepatic damage
- Initial reduced doses for patients with hepatic damage
Overdose Effects
- Toxic dose varies considerably
- CNS and respiratory depression
- Immediate hospitalization necessary
