Indications
- Bronchial asthma
- Bronchospasm
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Pulmonary disease with spastic bronchial component
Pharmacology
- Selective inhibition of phosphodiesterase 4
- Relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle
- Inhibition of platelet activating factor (PAF)
- Inhibition of leukotriene production
Dosage & Administration
- Dosage for elderly: 200mg tablet two or three times daily
- Dosage for adults: 400mg tablet two or three times daily
- Dosage for children over 12 years of age: 10ml syrup or 200mg tablet two or three times daily
- Dosage for children 6-12 years of age: 6-9 mg/kg body weight two times daily
- Special dosage if required daily dose is 400mg
Interaction
- Avoid concurrent administration with other xanthine preparations
- Limit consumption of caffeine-containing beverages and food
- Exercise caution when administering with ephedrine or other sympathomimetic drugs
- Possible interactions with erythromycin, TAO, lincomycin, clindamycin, allopurinol, cimetidine, influenza vaccine, propanolol, phenytoin, other anticonvulsants, and cigarette smoking
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to the drug or other xanthine derivatives
- Acute myocardial infarction
- Hypotension
- During lactation

- Irritability
- Insomnia
- Tachycardia
- Extrasystoles
- Tachypnea
- Hyperglycemia (rare)
- Albuminuria (rare)
- Severe cardiac arrhythmias (in case of overdose)
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Insufficient clinical evidence for use during pregnancy
- Contraindicated during lactation
- No interference with ability to drive and use machines
Precautions & Warnings
- Factors that may reduce hepatic clearance of xanthine derivatives
- Caution in patients with cardiac disease, hypertension, elderly, severe hypoxemia, hyperthyroidism, chronic corpulmonale, congestive heart failure, liver disease, peptic ulcer, renal impairment
- Monitoring of blood levels in certain cases is recommended
Overdose Effects
- Severe cardiac arrhythmias
- Tonic-clonic seizure
- Symptomatic treatment of cardiovascular collapse in case of overdose
