Indications
- Treatment of hypertension
- Reducing the risk of stroke in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy
Pharmacology
- Potent vasoconstrictor - angiotensin II
- Aldosterone secretion stimulation
- Selective blocking of angiotensin II binding
- Thiazide diuretic action
Dosage
- Usual starting dose of 50/12.5 tablet once daily
- Increased dosage to 100/25 once daily if needed
- Antihypertensive effect attained within three weeks
- No initial dosage adjustment for elderly patients
Administration
- Can be administered with other antihypertensive agents
- May be administered with or without food
Interaction
- No significant drug-drug interactions with certain medications
- Potential interactions with potassium-sparing diuretics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
- Interaction with antidiabetic drugs
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the product
- Anuria or hypersensitivity to sulfonamide-derived drugs
Side Effects
- Symptomatic hypotension including dizziness
- Occasional hyperkalemia
- Angioedema
- Vertigo, gastrointestinal disturbances, angina, palpitation, edema, dyspnea, headache
- Occasional hepatitis, atrial fibrillation, syncope, paraesthesia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Avoid in pregnancy unless essential
- Limited information on use during breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings
- Periodic determination of serum electrolytes
- Risk of hypokalemia with severe cirrhosis or prolonged therapy
- Impaired renal function
