Indications
- Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma
- Acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)
- Relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (AR): Seasonal & Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
Pharmacology
- Selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist
- Inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
- Correlated with the pathophysiology of asthma & allergic rhinitis
- Inhibits the release of cysteinyl leukotrienes from various cells
DosageAdministration
- Adults and adolescents: 10 mg tablet once daily
- Pediatric patients: 5 mg tablet once daily (6-14 years), 4 mg tablet once daily (2-5 years), 4 mg oral granules once daily (6 months-5 years)
- No dosage adjustment for hepatic or renal insufficiency
- Similar pharmacokinetic profile in elderly and younger adults
Interaction
- No clinically important effects on the pharmacokinetics of certain drugs
- Used concomitantly with a wide range of commonly prescribed drugs without evidence of clinical adverse interactions
- Phenobarbital decreases the AUC of Breasy by approximately 40%
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the product
SideEffects
- Common: Diarrhoea, fever, headache, nausea, skin reactions, upper respiratory tract infection
- Uncommon: Anxiety, depression, dizziness, dry mouth, muscle complaints, sleep disorders
- Rare: Angioedema, disorientation, memory loss, palpitations, suicidal tendencies, tremor
PregnancyLactation
- Crosses the placenta in animal studies
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution should be exercised when given to a nursing mother
PrecautionsWarnings
- Not indicated for use in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
- Appropriate rescue medication should be available
- Caution in patients with known aspirin sensitivity
- Should not be used as monotherapy for the treatment of exercise induced bronchospasm
- Not to be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids

- The most frequently occurring adverse experiences include abdominal pain, somnolence, headache, thirst, vomiting, psychomotor hyperactivity
