Description
- Carol-D 500 mg Tablet is a combination of calcium carbonate and vitamin D3. It is used to prevent and treat calcium and vitamin D deficiency.
Indications
- Osteoporosis

- Disorders of osteogenesis
- Supplement in case of inadequate intake of Calcium in childhood diet

Composition
- Each tablet contains Calcium Carbonate USP 1250 mg (Coral source) equivalent to 500 mg of elemental Calcium & Vitamin D USP 200 IU
- Each DX tablet contains Calcium Carbonate USP 1500 mg (Coral source) equivalent to 600 mg of elemental Calcium & Vitamin D USP 400 IU
- Each effervescent tablet contains Calcium Carbonate (Coral source) USP 1500 mg equivalent to 600 mg of elemental Calcium and Vitamin D3 400 IU as Cholecalciferol USP
Pharmacology
- Adequate Calcium in the blood is vital for bodily functions
- Vitamin D aids in Calcium absorption and stimulates bone formation
- Coral Calcium has a structure similar to human bone, ensuring better absorption
- Vitamin D3 aids in Calcium absorption from the GI tract and helps maintain Calcium balance in the body
Dosage and administration
- One tablet once or twice daily with plenty of water or as directed by the physician
- Taking with a full stomach ensures better absorption
- Effervescent tablet should be dissolved in a glass of water and taken orally
- Stir the solution with a spoon before drinking for better absorption
Interaction
- Thiazide diuretics reduce urinary excretion of calcium
- Systemic corticosteroids reduce calcium absorption
- Ion exchange resins and laxatives may reduce gastrointestinal absorption of vitamin D
- Calcium carbonate may interfere with the absorption of tetracycline preparations
- Hypercalcaemia may increase the toxicity of cardiac glycosides during treatment with calcium and vitamin D
Contraindications
- Hypercalcemia and hyperparathyroidism
- Hypercalciuria and nephrolithiasis
- Hypersensitivity to the component of this preparation
- Severe renal insufficiencies
- Concomitant digoxin therapy

Pregnancy and lactation
- Daily intake during pregnancy should not exceed 1500 mg calcium and 600 IU cholecalciferol
- Overdoses of calcium and vitamin D should be avoided in pregnant women to prevent adverse effects on the developing fetus
- Calcium and vitamin D3 pass into breast milk, caution advised when giving additional vitamin D to the child
Precautions and warnings
- Monitor serum calcium levels and renal function during long-term treatment
- Caution in elderly patients on concomitant treatment with cardiac glycosides or diuretics
- Use with caution in patients with impairment of renal function
- Monitor effect on calcium and phosphate levels, risk of soft tissue calcification, and serum calcium levels in patients with severe renal insufficiency or sarcoidosis
- Consider dose adjustment when prescribing other drugs containing vitamin D
Overdose effects
- Hypervitaminosis D and hypercalcaemia
- Symptoms may include anorexia, thirst, nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, fatigue, mental disturbances, polydipsia, polyuria, bone pain, nephrocalcinosis, nephrolithiasis, cardiac arrhythmias, coma, and death
- Treatment includes discontinuing calcium and other implicated drugs, rehydration, and monitoring electrolytes, renal function, and diuresis
