Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
- Potent bactericidal activity
- Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
- High stability in the presence of beta lactamases
- Long plasma elimination half-life
- Not metabolized in the body
- Highly protein bound
Dosage
- 1 to 2 gm dose for adults by intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
- 250 mg IM dose for uncomplicated gonococcal infections
- 1 g IV dose for surgical prophylaxis
- 50 to 75 mg/kg dose for infants and children (01 month or older)
- Duration of therapy: 4 to 14 days; longer therapy for complicated infections
Administration
- Preparation of Solutions for Intramuscular / Intravenous Injections
- Dissolving in Lidocaine HCI 1% or Water for injection
- Administered over 2-4 minutes
- Freshly reconstituted solution recommended
- Patient tolerance test before treatment

Use in Special Populations
- Avoid use in premature and newborn neonates (up to 28 days of age)
