Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal & perennial allergic rhinitis
- Treatment of uncomplicated skin manifestations of chronic idiopathic urticaria
- Treatment of allergen induced asthma
Pharmacology
- Potent H1 receptor antagonist
- Reduces migration of inflammatory cells
- Reduces release of mediators associated with the late phase of the allergic reaction
- Plasma half-life approximately 11 hours
Dosage & Administration
- Adults and Children 6 years and older: 1 tablet or 2 teaspoonfuls daily
- Children 2-6 years: 1 teaspoonful once daily or 1/2 teaspoonful twice daily
- Children 6 months to 2 years: 1/2 teaspoonful once daily
- Recommended dosage regimen for injectable form: once every 24 hours
- Cetirizine injectable dosage form not recommended in pediatric patients less than 6 years of age with impaired renal or hepatic function
Interaction
- No clinically significant drug interactions with Theophylline, Azithromycin, Pseudoephedrine, Ketoconazole, or Erythromycin
Contraindications
- History of hypersensitivity to Cetirizine or hydroxyzine
Side Effects
- Most common side effect is somnolence

- US FDA Pregnancy Category: B
- Cetirizine Hydrochloride excreted in human milk, caution advised when administered to a nursing woman
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution advised when driving a car or operating heavy machinery
Use in Special Populations
- Reduction in total body clearance in patients with mild to moderate hepatic and renal impairment
- Safety demonstrated in pediatric patients aged 6 months to 5 years
- Reduction in clearance in elderly patients proportional to decrease in creatinine clearance
