Indications

Pharmacology
- Contains antitussive
- Contains decongestant
- Contains antihistamine
- Dextromethorphan acts on cough center in medulla
- Phenylephrine shrinks blood vessels in nasal passage
- Triprolidine provides relief from conditions triggered by histamine release
- Triprolidine has mild CNS depressant properties
Dosage
- Adult dosage: 1 teaspoonful every 4 hours
- Children (6-12 years) dosage: ½ teaspoonful every 4 hours
- Caution advised for children (2-6 years)
- Not to be used in children below 2 years old
Administration
- Can be taken with or without food
- Recommended to measure liquid doses carefully
- Use the provided measuring device for accurate dosing
Interaction
- May interact with MAO inhibitors
- Should be used with caution with certain antihistamines
- Should be used with caution with certain beta blockers
- Should be used with caution with certain inhaled anesthetics
- Should be used with caution with certain narcotic pain relievers
Contraindications
- Avoid in patients with liver disease
- Avoid in asthmatic patients
- Contraindicated in patients taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors
- Contraindicated within 2 weeks from stopping MAO inhibitors
- Contraindicated in patients with severe hypertension
- Contraindicated in patients with severe coronary artery disease
Side Effects
- May cause drowsiness
- May cause constipation
- Other side effects may include GIT discomfort, transient hypertension, dry mouth, restlessness, palpitations
- Less common side effects may include allergic reactions, tight chest, thickening of bronchial secretions, toxic psychosis, blood dyscrasia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use in pregnancy and lactation is best avoided
Precautions & Warnings
- May cause drowsiness
- Avoid driving or operating machinery if affected
- Avoid alcoholic drinks while on this medication
- Use with caution in patients with epilepsy, prostatic hypertrophy, glaucoma, hepatic disease, hypertension, heart disease, diabetes
- Use with caution in patients with hyperthyroidism, stenosing peptic ulcer, pyloro-duodenal obstruction, bladder neck obstruction
- Consult a physician if symptoms do not improve within one week or are accompanied by high fever
Overdose Effects
- Hospital admission advised in cases of overdose
- May produce respiratory depression, paranoid psychosis, delusions, hallucinations, convulsions
- Treatment includes emptying the stomach, sedative administration, and supportive measures
