Pharmacology
- Beta carotene: Converted to vitamin A (Retinol) when required
- Vitamin C: Powerful reducing agent present in living tissues
- Vitamin E: Defense against oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation
Dosage & Administration
- Administered orally
- Adult dose: 1 tablet daily or as prescribed by the physician
Interaction
- Cholestyramine decreases absorption of beta carotene
- Colestipol decreases absorption of beta carotene
- Neomycin decreases absorption of beta carotene
- Oral contraceptives containing Oestrogen reduce circulating vitamin C levels
- Tetracycline reduces circulating vitamin C levels
- Aspirin reduces circulating vitamin C levels
- Vitamin E enhances the anticoagulant activity of anticoagulant drugs
- High doses of vitamin E impair intestinal absorption of vitamins A and K
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to any of its components
Side Effects
- Beta carotene: Hypercarotenosis, yellowish coloration of skin
- Vitamin C: Gastrointestinal tract upset, renal stone formation in larger doses
- Vitamin E: Diarrhea, abdominal pain, cramps, fatigue in larger doses
Pregnancy & Lactation
No teratogenic effects in humans, caution in prescribing to pregnant women
Precautions & Warnings
- Beta carotene: May cause harm to heavy smokers and alcoholics
- Vitamin C: Caution in patients with hyperoxaluria
- Vitamin E: Caution in patients taking anticoagulant drugs
