Indications
- Prophylaxis of gastric and duodenal ulceration in NSAID users at high risk
- Healing of established NSAID-induced gastric and duodenal damage
- Healing of gastric and duodenal ulcers in the absence of NSAID therapy
- Induction of labor
- Prevention and treatment of postpartum hemorrhage
Pharmacology
- Rapid de-esterification to its free acid
- Diminished plasma concentrations of Misoprostol acid when taken with food
- Antisecretory properties
- Mucosal protective properties
- Increase in bicarbonate and mucus production
Dosage & Administration
- 800 mcg daily for benign gastric and duodenal ulceration
- 200 mcg 2-4 times daily for prophylaxis of NSAID-induced ulcer
- 25 mcg in the posterior fornix of the vagina for labor induction
- 600 mcg orally for prevention of postpartum hemorrhage
- 600 mcg orally or 1000 mcg per rectally for treatment of postpartum hemorrhage
Interaction
No evidence of clinically significant interaction with cardiac, pulmonary, CNS drugs, and NSAIDs
