Indications

Pharmacology
- Blocks COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes
- Decreased prostaglandin synthesis
- Desired antipyretic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory properties
- Undesired adverse effects on gastrointestinal upset and renal toxicities
Dosage & Administration
- Oral administration with water
- Enteric coated tablet for adults and children
- Suspension for juvenile rheumatoid arthritis

Interaction
- ACE inhibitors - diminish antihypertensive effect
- Antacids & Sucralfate - delay absorption
- Aspirin - increase adverse effects
- Diuretics - reduce natriuretic effect
- Methotrexate - enhance toxicity
- Warfarin - increase risk of GI bleeding
- Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors - increase risk of GI bleeding
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Naproxen
- Previous asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions to aspirin or other NSAIDs
- Perioperative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal - Heartburn, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, dyspepsia
- Central Nervous System - Headache, vertigo, drowsiness
- Dermatological - Pruritus, purpura
- Cardiovascular - Edema, palpitation
- Others - Visual disturbances, hearing disturbances
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Adverse effects on fetus
- Delay in parturition
- Premature closure of ductus arteriosus
- Severe pulmonary hypertension in infants
- Excretion in breast milk
- Possible risks to the breast-fed infant
Precautions & Warnings
- Renal effects - renal papillary necrosis, abnormal renal pathology
- Acute interstitial nephritis, hematuria, proteinuria
- Nephrotic syndrome
- Elimination by the kidneys
- Caution in patients with impaired renal function
- Hepatic effects - moderate to severe jaundice
