Pharmacological Class

Mechanism of Action

  • Interference in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall

Absorption

  • 40% to 50% whether administered with or without food

Recommended Adult Dosage

  • 200-400 mg daily based on infection severity

Recommended Pediatric Dosage

  • 8 mg/kg/day for children
  • 5 mg/kg twice daily in typhoid

Renal Impairment Dosage

  • Dose of 200 mg once daily if creatinine clearance is less than 20 ml/min

Interaction

  • Increases in prothrombin times possible in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
