Indications
- Monotherapy in treatment of partial-onset seizures
- Adjunctive therapy for various types of seizures
Description
- Mechanism of action is unknown
- Minimal activity in submaximal stimulation
- Inhibition of burst firing without affecting normal neuronal excitability
Dosage
- Adult starting dose 250 mg twice daily
- Maximum dose 1500 mg twice daily
- Children under 6 should use oral solution
Administration
- Tablets must be taken orally with liquid
- Administered in two divided doses
Interactions
- Little influence on antiepileptic medicinal products
- Inhibition of renal clearance of primary metabolite by probenecid
- Concomitant use with methotrexate may increase its concentration to toxic levels
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to active substance or pyrrolidone derivatives
Side Effects
- Common adverse reactions include somnolence, asthenia, infection, dizziness
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings
- Dose adjustment in renal impairment
- Rare cases of decreased blood cell counts reported
- Risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors
- Tablet formulation not for infants and children under age 6

- Dose adjustment in elderly and renal impairment
- No dose adjustment needed in mild to moderate hepatic impairment

- Symptoms include somnolence, agitation, respiratory depression
