Alcot 800 mg+160 mg (Tablet)

Indications

• Treatment of respiratory tract infections like bronchitis, pneumonia, and sinusitis
• Treatment of genitourinary tract infections like cystitis, pyelonephritis, and prostatitis
• Treatment of gastrointestinal tract infections caused by Salmonella
• Treatment of skin infections including pyoderma, abscesses, and wound infections
• Treatment of other infections like osteomyelitis, septicaemia, and bacillary dysentery
• Prophylaxis of chronic bronchitis
• Usability for adjuvant therapy in cholera along with fluid and electrolyte replacement

Pharmacology

• Bactericidal activity against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
• Bactericidal activity against some protozoa
• Contains Trimethoprim and Sulphamethoxazole in a 1:5 combination
• Exerts bactericidal action by sequential blockade of two bacterial enzyme systems in the biosynthesis of folinic acid

Dosage & Administration

• Recommended dosage for mild to moderate infections in adults and children over 12 years
• Recommended dosage for severe infections in adults and children over 12 years
• Long term therapy dosage for adults and children over 12 years
• Recommended dosage for gonorrhoea in adults and children over 12 years
• Recommended dosage for children under 12 years based on age

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to trimethoprim or sulphonamides
• Megaloblastic anaemia due to folate deficiency
• Marked liver parenchymal damage
• Blood dyscrasia
• Severe renal insufficiency
• Glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency

Side Effects

• Rare side effects like crystalluria, allergic reactions, haemolysis, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, agranulocytosis
• Less serious side effects like malaise, headache, nausea, and vomiting

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Not recommended during pregnancy and nursing period due to potential risks of kernicterus
• Sulphonamides pass the placenta and are excreted in breast milk

Precautions & Warnings

• Prolonged full dose treatment associated with the risk of macrocytic anaemia
• Interference in the conversion of Folic acid into Folinic acid
• Possible potentiation of action of sulphonylurea in diabetic patients
