Niconic 50 mg (Tablet (Extended Release))

Indications

• Reduction of elevated TC
• Reduction of elevated LDL-C
• Increase of HDL-C
• Treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia
• Treatment of mixed dyslipidemia
• Risk reduction of recurrent nonfatal myocardial infarction
• Treatment of very high serum triglyceride levels
• Risk reduction of pancreatitis

Pharmacology

• Proven effectiveness in lowering VLDL, LDL, total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels
• Positive impact on raising HDL levels
• Prescribed for the treatment of cardiovascular disease

Dosage & Administration

• Initial Dose: 500 mg tablet at bedtime
• Maintenance Dose: 1000-2000 mg once daily at bedtime
• Increment of daily dosage should not exceed 500 mg in a 4-week period

Interaction

• Potentiation of effects of ganglionic blocking agents and vasoactive drugs
• Possible decrease in metabolic clearance by aspirin
• Binding to colestipol and cholestyramine
• Recommended interval between ingestion of bile acid-binding resins and Niacin

Contraindications

• Known hypersensitivity to Niacin or any component
• Significant or unexplained hepatic dysfunction
• Active peptic ulcer disease or arterial bleeding

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Contradicted for use due to lack of information

Precautions & Warnings

• Attempt to control hyperlipidemia with appropriate diet and exercise
• Close observation for patients with jaundice, hepatobiliary disease, or peptic ulcer
• Frequent monitoring of liver function tests and blood glucose
• Caution for diabetic patients
• Use with caution in patients with unstable angina or in the acute phase of MI
• Close monitoring for elevated uric acid levels
• Close monitoring for small reductions in platelet count and increases in prothrombin time
• Close monitoring for small reductions in phosphorus levels
