Description
Povidone Iodine is a complex of iodine and an organic polymer, povidone. It gives rapid microbicidal activity against bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi. It is available as cream, ointment, solution, powder, gargle & mouthwash, surgical scrub, and ophthalmic solution.

DosageAndAdministration
- Cream or Ointment:
- Apply once or twice daily for a maximum of 14 days
- Apply once or twice a week for prevention
- Solution:
- Apply as paint, spray, or wet soak
- Gargle & Mouthwash:
- Use undiluted or diluted with warm water for up to 30 seconds, repeat up to four times daily
- Surgical Scrub:
- For preoperative and postoperative washing
- For use in physician's office
- Powder:
- Apply a light dusting to the affected area
Pharmacology
Povidone Iodine is a complex of iodine and povidone, which exhibits rapid microbicidal activity against a broad spectrum of microorganisms. It is also non-staining and active in the presence of various substances.
Interaction
- Interacts with strong alkali
- May exhibit hypothyroidic effect with concurrent lithium therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Avoid in patients with thyroid disorders or receiving lithium therapy
- Assess serum iodide levels in severely burnt patients
