Description

Povidone Iodine is a complex of iodine and an organic polymer, povidone. It gives rapid microbicidal activity against bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi. It is available as cream, ointment, solution, powder, gargle & mouthwash, surgical scrub, and ophthalmic solution.

DosageAndAdministration

  • Cream or Ointment:
    • Apply once or twice daily for a maximum of 14 days
    • Apply once or twice a week for prevention
  • Solution:
    • Apply as paint, spray, or wet soak
  • Gargle & Mouthwash:
    • Use undiluted or diluted with warm water for up to 30 seconds, repeat up to four times daily
  • Surgical Scrub:
    • For preoperative and postoperative washing
    • For use in physician's office
  • Powder:
    • Apply a light dusting to the affected area

Pharmacology

Povidone Iodine is a complex of iodine and povidone, which exhibits rapid microbicidal activity against a broad spectrum of microorganisms. It is also non-staining and active in the presence of various substances.

Interaction

  • Interacts with strong alkali
  • May exhibit hypothyroidic effect with concurrent lithium therapy

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Avoid in patients with thyroid disorders or receiving lithium therapy
  • Assess serum iodide levels in severely burnt patients
