Indications
- Treatment of duodenal ulcer
- Treatment of gastric ulcer
- Treatment of chronic gastritis
- Prophylaxis of gastrointestinal hemorrhage from stress ulceration in seriously ill patients
Pharmacology
- Non-systemic drug
- Promotes healing of ulcers
- Forms protective barrier at ulcer site
- Inhibits pepsin and bile
Dosage
- Recommended adult dose: 2 gm twice daily
- Recommended adult dose for prophylaxis: 1 gm orally or via nasogastric tube 4 to 6 times a day
- Maximum daily dose: 8 gm
- No established safety and efficacy in children under 14 years of age
Administration
- To be taken on an empty stomach
- Avoid concomitant administration of antacids within 30 minutes
Interaction
- May reduce bioavailability of certain drugs including Fluoroquinolones, Tetracycline, Ketoconazole, etc.
- Separation of administration from other agents recommended for critical alterations in bioavailability
- Should not be co-administered with citrate preparations
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to sucralfate
Side Effects
- Common adverse events include headache, nausea, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, and urticaria
- Episodes of hyperglycemia reported in diabetic patients
- Bezoar formation reported in patients with underlying medical conditions
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety in pregnant women not established
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution in administration to breastfeeding women
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with renal dysfunction
- Not recommended for individuals on dialysis
- Laboratory testing recommended for patients with renal impairment
- Not recommended for use in neonates
- Caution in patients with impairment of renal function
- Concomitant use of other aluminum-containing medications not recommended
- Bezoars reported in severely ill patients in intensive care units
- Dose adjustments not necessary in elderly patients
Use in Special Populations
- Not recommended for use in children under 14 years of age
- Dose adjustments not necessary for elderly patients
- Use with caution in renal insufficiency patients
- Patients should not drive if feeling dizzy or drowsy
Overdose Effects
- In most cases, overdose remains asymptomatic
- Symptoms of abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting may occur in some cases
- Minimal risks associated with overdose
