Description

  • Lipicon is indicated as an adjunct to diet to reduce elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B (Apo-B) and triglycerides levels in following diseases when response to diet and other non-pharmacological measures is inadequate.
  • Atorvastatin is a selective inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, lowering plasma cholesterol and lipoprotein levels by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase and cholesterol synthesis in the liver.
  • Administration dosage varies for adults and children based on the particular condition being treated.
  • The risk of myopathy during treatment with drugs of this class is increased with concurrent administration of certain drugs.
  • Atorvastatin should not be used in patients with hypersensitivity to any component of the medication and in active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations of serum transaminases.
  • Lipicon is generally well-tolerated, with the most frequent side effects being constipation, flatulence, dyspepsia, and abdominal pain.
  • Atorvastatin is contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation, and should be used with caution in patients who consume substantial quantities of alcohol or have a history of liver disease.
  • Liver function tests should be performed before the initiation of treatment and periodically thereafter.
  • Keep Lipicon in a dry place away from light and heat, and out of the reach of children.

DosageAndAdministration

  • Dosage for primary hypercholesterolaemia and combined hyperlipidaemia varies for adults and children.
  • Another guideline recommends the starting dose of Atorvastatin to be 10 or 20 mg once daily, with possible dosage adjustment based on lipid level analysis within 2 to 4 weeks of initiation.
  • In pediatric patients, the recommended starting dose is 10 mg/day, with doses individualized according to the recommended goal of therapy and adjustments made at intervals of 4 weeks or more.

Interaction

  • The risk of myopathy during treatment with drugs of this class is increased with concurrent administration of cyclosporine, fibric acid derivatives, niacin (nicotinic acid), erythromycin, and azole antifungals.
  • Plasma concentrations of atorvastatin have been shown to decrease or increase when coadministered with certain drugs such as antacids, colestipol, digoxin, erythromycin, oral contraceptives, and warfarin.

Contraindications

  • Atorvastatin should not be used in patients with hypersensitivity to any component of this medication, in active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations of serum transaminases, and in patients with a history of serious adverse reaction to prior administration of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors.
