Description
- The Carocet Antioxidant Multivitamin Tablet is a combination of antioxidant vitamins used in the prevention of coronary heart diseases, certain types of cancer, and aging. It also protects against free radical damage caused by exercise, illness, medications, air pollution, smoke, radiation, and pesticides.
Dosage & Administration
- Orally administered
- Adult dose is 1 tablet daily or as prescribed by the physician
Indications
- Used in conditions where free radical damage is significant
- Prevention of coronary heart diseases and certain types of cancer
- Protection against aging and free radical damage caused by various factors
Mode of Action
- Beta carotene is converted to vitamin A when required
- Vitamin A has biochemical functions on retina, growth, tissue differentiation, and immunological response
- Vitamin C is a powerful reducing agent and is essential for numerous biological processes
- Vitamin C is important in the defense against infection and for the normal functioning of T-lymphocyte and leukocyte
- Vitamin E acts as a defense against oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation
Interaction
- Cholestyramine, Colestipol, and Neomycin may decrease the absorption of beta carotene
- Circulating vitamin C levels may be reduced during prolonged administration of certain oral contraceptives and drugs like Tetracycline and Aspirin
- Vitamin E may enhance the anticoagulant activity of anticoagulant drugs
- High doses of vitamin E can impair intestinal absorption of vitamins A and K
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any of its components
Side Effects
- Beta carotene is safe even at high doses, but excessive intake may cause hypercarotenosis characterized by yellowish skin discoloration
- Large doses of vitamin C may lead to gastrointestinal upset and renal stone formation
- Doses over 800 mg of vitamin E may cause diarrhea, abdominal pain, fatigue, reduced resistance to bacterial infection, and transiently raised blood pressure
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Beta carotene, vitamin C, and vitamin E have no teratogenic effects in humans, but caution should be exercised in prescribing to pregnant women
Precautions & Warnings
- Beta carotene may cause harm to heavy smokers and alcoholics
- Vitamin C should be given with caution to patients with hyperoxaluria
- Vitamin E should be used with caution in patients taking anticoagulant drugs
