Fivita (Capsule)

Indications

• Treatment of Iron, Folic acid, Vitamin B complex, and Vitamin C deficiency
• Prophylaxis for Iron, Folic acid, Vitamin B complex, and Vitamin C deficiency
• Useful for pregnancy or when planning for pregnancy

Composition

• Extended release capsule
• Ferrous Sulphate 150 mg
• Folic acid 0.5 mg
• Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B1) 2 mg
• Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) 2 mg
• Nicotinamide (Vitamin B3) 10 mg
• Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6) 1 mg
• Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) 50 mg

Pharmacology

• Iron essential for red blood cells and iron deficiency anaemia
• Folic acid essential for coenzyme production and nucleoprotein synthesis
• Vitamin C necessary for collagen formation and tissue repair
• Vitamin B complex essential for cell health and energy

Dosage & Administration

• Recommended adult dose is one capsule daily
• In severe deficiency states, 2 capsules a day may be required
• Or as directed by the physician

Interaction

• Care should be taken when given to patients with Iron storage or Iron absorption disease
• Iron chelates with antacids and Tetracycline may impair absorption if taken concurrently

Contraindications

• Known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients
• Contraindicated in haemochromatosis, haemosiderosis, and patients receiving repeated blood transfusion or with anaemia not due to by iron deficiency
• Caution with patients taking Levodopa as Pyridoxine reduces its effect

Side Effects

• Generally well tolerated
• Possible allergic reactions

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Recommended during pregnancy and lactation

Precautions & Warnings

• Care should be taken in patients who may develop iron overload
• Iron chelates with tetracycline and absorption may be impaired

Overdose Effects

• Accidental overdose of iron containing products is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under 6
• Avoid higher doses with liver disease or hemochromatosis
• Excess iron can cause bloody diarrhea, vomiting, acidosis, darkened stools, abdominal pain
• Higher doses of Nicotinamide may cause vomiting, diarrhea
• Sensory neuropathy observed with very high Pyridoxine consumption
